What is slate?

From geology’s perspective, slate stone is termed as a metamorphic rock with sedimentary origins. According to the different sections, it is essentially a specific type of clastic-clayey schist known as "marl," which is formed from a mixture of clay and limestone of detrital-organogenic or chemical origin.

The low-grade metamorphism process of sedimentary rocks (technically called semi-metamorphism or anchi-metamorphism) is what gives black slate stone its unique ability to split easily into very thin, light, and impermeable slabs.
